CONGRATULATIONS to Peppers Hidden Vale on adding another tourism award to the trophy cabinet. The magnificent hideaway near Grandchester won the Best Hotel Restaurant at the Queensland Restaurant and Catering awards presented in Brisbane. Peppers also scored Best Hotel Restaurant at the Darling Downs Restaurant of the Year and Best Hotel Restaurant awards in June. It is a credit to the management and staff at Peppers Hidden Vale and a tribute to their hard work, dedication and commitment to excellence. The Ipswich region is blessed with many man-made and natural features which are attracting an increasing number of visitors each year.

Australia’s Open Garden Scheme offers two fantastic Ipswich gardens to explore this weekend. Hinemoa at 2 Ferrett Street Sadliers Crossing and Whitby Cottage on the corner of Bradfield and High Streets in Brassall will be open to the public between 10am and 4.30pm Saturday and Sunday. Entry is $6 per garden with under 18s free. Morning and afternoon teas will help raise money for charity. Since 1987 gardens owners with the scheme have raised over $4 million for the charities of their choice.

New businesses continue to open in Ipswich and create jobs. The long awaited opening of Trade Secret at Home HQ West Ipswich is set for Thursday October 1. This new store will employ up to 50 staff and open seven days a week. Trade Secret will join other major stores in the complex including Spotlight and Fantastic Furniture.

Following the negative comments made in parliament last week, I want to congratulate the great work of the churches and community groups in Springfield. There’s no doubt there is a tremendous community spirit which is driving this young community forward in a positive way.

Jason Swan of Yamanto is planning a fundraising day for Beyond Blue by hitting 3000 golf balls this Saturday at the Ipswich Golf Driving Range in Raceview. Putt Putt golf, a raffle and a $2 sausage sizzle will also help raise funds. Guest speaker David O’Neill from the Open Minds Personal Helpers and Mentors program will be supporting Jason on the day.

Ipswich Fitness in the mall is locally owned and operated and will celebrate 10 years with an open day on Thursday. Activities planned include free group fitness classes and demonstrations throughout the day.

A weekly column from the Mayor is also printed in the Queensland Times, Ipswich Advertiser, Ipswich News and Gatton Star.
